Darkness. That is the only thing that can describe the night in this damned forest. The half full moon is covered behind a dense layer of cloud, though the trees are so thick here that I doubt that much light would get through anyway. A place to sleep for the rest of the night would be nice as I didn't sleep enough during the day to stay awake all night. I just need to keep moving forward. Start with two paws and then the other two. That's it. Keep it going...
The black wolf's golden-yellow eyes could be seen glimmering through the darkness. The right eye, however, was less distinguishable than the other. A long scar ran down that side of the wolf's face, not allowing his eye to open fully. Trudging along, he carefully made his way through the dense forest. Little did he know, he was heading straight to what is known in this land as the Vital River.
Is that water I hear? Maybe there is another one of those strange animals that build dam's in the water. Man, it has been about two and a half weeks since anything has entered my stomach. The sound of water is getting louder. Do I even have enough energy to make it to this river? What's this, a clearing ahead? Maybe I am closer to this river than I thought. Yes it is the river! And look, a Dam!
The black wolf gets really excited, tail wagging, and climbs to the top of the Dam and starts pulling apart the half-decomposed logs.
Just one log at a time. Push harder! Yes, it is coming apart. I am going to feast tonight! There it goes! I can still chase it down...
The black wolf chases down a small animal and delivers a fatal bite to the small neck. Instinct takes over, and the wolf howls for a successful hunt. He realizes what he just did.
I just... howled... I sent a beacon to every wolf in this damned forest. They are going to be all over me, wanting to know what I am doing in their territory, where I am from, where I am going.... I haven't howled in years. Well, I can either run with my food, or stand my ground. Do I have the courage to stand up to another wolf? Do I have the courage to even see another wolf?[/i]

Tired, aching paws hiked through the ever thickening forest, threatening to betray her wobbly legs at every step. Her throat rippled with her heavy panting. Her dry tongue lolled, beaten by dehydration. The female's nose twitched at the scent of another being, quite a while away. Her ears perked up attentively when a faint snarling reached her auds. Paws halted but legs still stiff and wobbly, the female managed to hold herself up longer to catch the next sound, which came in more loud and much clearer than the last. It was a bit rusty, but she recognized the tone as a song of victory.
Another wolf... she thought. This forest isn't so deserted after all.
The hackles of her back prickled at the chill in her spine. Suddenly her limbs weren't in so much pain anymore. Her feet carried her faster than they had earlier, making the grass and fallen leaves rustle as she raced to the source of the sound. The ground thundered in reacting to the female's merciless run until the shock of her pounding feet lessened as they padded onto softer ground. The female finally came into the clearing, where the river was much more kind to the ground here than anywhere else in the forest. The cool grass and soil was comforting to her paws, having trekked over sticks, fallen trees, rocks, and other rough terrain. Here there was a mixture of smells. Fresh, cool water, fur soiled by bloody flesh... and another male.
What IS that delightful smell! Her tongue flicked out of her mouth and over her blood parched fangs. The sable female was now but a couple bounds away from this wolf and his catch. He was an elder she could tell, but she didn't know if he would stand and fight, give up the catch, or retreat with it. Her ever alert ears caught the calls of various critters and gave the thought some consideration. Either I can try my luck with this one, or I can leave him be and rest up for a hunt... she pondered.
After a few moments of exchanging glares with the old one, she snorted lightly and turned away, uninterested in any trouble in her condition. She headed for the water's edge and took quite a while drinking. Her legs collapsed and she crawled pitifully closer to the water, stretching her neck out desperately to continue her drink. When she was finished, she stretched out her arms and legs and rested her muzzle inbetween her forepaws.

I do not have much time now. I need to decide what I am going to do. I just do not know....
The wolf stood there with his prey seemingly paralyzed, unsure of what to do. Suddenly, the wolf becomes very alert, ears on end.
What was that? Could it be another wolf? I should be able to smell it... Perhaps my nose is not be as good as it used to be.
The wolf searches the area from where the sound came. He spots amber eyes glaring at him from a distance.
My god, it is another wolf, and a female by the looks of it. Why is she just glaring at me? Why doesn't she come forward?
The female wolf snorts and heads towards the river bank. She collapses half-way there and begins to crawl towards the water.
Look at her! She barely has the energy to make it to the river! I should offer her some of my catch, but she is another wolf...
The black wolf picks up his catch and begins to leave. He goes about a dozen strides, and stops... He stands there for a few moments, apparently contemplating what to do, before turning around and trudging back to where the female Wolf lay.

Sensing the male's return, the females ears sat up and flickered at the sound of his footsteps. She was exhausted, her eyes remained shut; they weren't necessary anyway. Her nose did most of the work and she smelled the male approaching. The scent of blood came with it. All the nerves in her nose twitched at the smell, and brought moisture back to the corners of her lips.
What are his intentions...? she pondered. Did the old one really feel some sort of sympathy and want to share? Her tail thumped from a little bit of excitement at this thought, but slowly rested knowing there wasn't any guarantee. Not to mention she didn't know this male. It didn't matter though. His energy seemed neutral and put her at ease. Finally the female opened her eyes and lifted her head to see the old male in his faded black and gray coat. Her tail thumped lightly once again and she allowed a friendly whine to slip through her nostrils.

The black wolf just stands a few steps away from the she-wolf, just looking at her. All she did was stare back after a friendly whine. Unsure of what to do, he gently tosses the bloody carcass to the side of the female wolf.
"Go ahead," the black wolf sighs, "eat all you want. You obviously need it more than I, if you are having trouble walking."
He wonders right past the she-wolf and sits down, looking away, deep into the forest, thinking about many things.
Why am I doing this? I have not associated myself with another wolf in over five years. Why start now? I should just leave, just walk away from the wolf.
The black wolf stands up, and begins to stagger away from the river.

Food.. she thought, her tongue flicking out at her fangs to ready them for her meal. Her eyes widened at the small creature. This would be her first meal in quite a while. The female questioned not the intentions of the older male, but tore voraciously into its flesh. The muscles in her jaw and throat tingled at the warm blood. Its meat was good and rich but it wouldn't be enough to fill her. At least it would hold her a little while until she could find a more filling target. This and the river would be her only source of energy for the next few days.
The female made sure nothing was left of the carcass; not even the bit of meat left on the bones. Those were licked and scraped clean. The kind elder had probably saved her life by doing this unnatural deed, and she would show her gratefulness for it... As soon as she'd awaken from her nap...

The black wolf travels a short distance away from the she-wolf finding a strange gray boulder and siting atop it. All he does is sit there peering deep into the depths of the night, thinking about everything and nothing... Some time passes, and the black wolf can be seen sound asleep next to the boulder, muzzle buried deep within his paws.

After a few hours, the female woke. She stirred, wiggling the sleepiness out of her legs and forearms. She rose to her feet, sliding her paws forward in a long stretch. Her jaws opened wide in a yawn, fangs bared, lips curled, and tongue lolling. The female took another short drink, being right beside the river when something came to her mind: Where has that male gone?
Tipping her muzzle upward the female scented around the air, attempting to locate the old one. She followed the scent and found him asleep on a large rock. Her head titled to the side, ears flickering as she listened to his breathing. The female padded over to him and stretched her neck and rested her head near his, wagging her tail and waiting for the wolf to notice her. She wanted to show her eagerness to repay him for the meal he so willingly gave up hours ago.

The black wolf slowly returned from his deep sleep. As he regains his senses, he notices a red shape near him. His vision focuses, a wolf. The black wolf leaps away from the Red Sable Wolf. Teeth bared, he lunges for the other wolf's throat. In mid leap, his memory returns to him, and he is able to pull the strike away in time. He slams into the she-wolf and they tumble a few feet. The black wolf returns to his stance, slightly panting.
"You are the one from the River! You startled me... Do not ever do that again!"
Realizing how he just reacted, the black wolf relaxes a little, lowering his tail, but is still on edge.
"I am sorry... I am not used to being around other wolves."

A bit shocked at the elder's reaction, she jumped back. The female realized that it was she who caused his discomfort and was quick to apologize. She thumped her tail lightly at her hocks, her rump lowering to the ground in a bit of submission. This was not her nature, and she was driven to be dominant most of the time, but now she knew it would be best if she honored her elder and respected him submissively. Lowering her rump all the way to the ground, her haunches folded, and the sable fae sat a good little distance, to give comfortable space between the two.
"You must forgive me. I gratefully accepted your offering and it has done me well." she licked her lips, recalling her last meal. "You must be hungry as well, I'm sure." Still feeling an emptiness in her belly, she rose and slowly began padding away. She spoke over her shoulder, "Join me if you will. I believe I'm ready for a good filling meal." A chuckle rumbled in her throat. "You may call me Lyliku if we are to be comrades now." The wolf stated cheerfully as she tipped her muzzle up to sniff out something more to eat.

The Black Wolf watched the she-wolf padded away. He mutters,"Lyliku, huh... Interesting."
The right thing to do would be to accept her generous offer as Comrades, he thinks as he begins following the path of Lyliku.
Am I really going to follow her? This wolf is, different than I would have expected a wolf to act like. Something is strange about her. I wonder if she is from the pack of this forest? This could be their way of, capturing me... I really do not have any choice right now but to follow her. Be ready for anything...
The black wolf picks up his strides and closes the gap between the two wolves. "I would not call us Comrades," he calls ahead,"just, acquaintances, for now. Two Wolves, helping each other for the hunt." He catches up to the side of the she-wolf, and his eyes begin wandering to the forest around him, searching for the slightest movement.

The black wolf continues following the she-wolf. He is still searching the forest around him, but not as vigorously as before. Looking at the she-wolf, he thinks:
Why hasn't she said anything this whole time? Considering her personality, you would think she would want to make herself known...
The black wolf follows her a little bit longer before finally saying, "You sure are a quiet one, Lyliku... Are you sure you know where you are going?"

{Lyliku is unable to continue posting, so I will continue for her}
Lyliku looks over at the Black Wolf, a cold stare. "Can you not smell it? Judging by the scent, it is about a mile or two to the north."
The black wolf breaks away from the glare of Lyliku. "No, I cannot smell anything it seems. In fact, I could not smell you until I walked over to you when we first met. That is why I was so surprised. It is really strange actually."
Silence ensues, and Lyliku is deep in thought. He is really unsure of himself. Look at him, he almost looks like he is expecting an ambush or something... Maybe he thinks that I am going to attack him? Why doesn't he trust me? The silence maintained until Lyliku finally speaks up. "You know, I introduced myself to you, but I have not received an introduction. Who are you?"

The black wolf flinches as she asks the question he has been dreading throughout their hunt for food.
Thoughts are racing. What should I say? I can not tell her the truth. I should just tell her that I have no name
"I...uh...don't really...uh...have a name. I came from a really distant pack. My mother barely raised me before the pack abandoned me in the middle of nowhere... I have been a loner ever since, so I do not really know what it would be like to be in a pack..."
Horrible! Absolutely horrible! Lyliku is never going to believe such a horrible lie! It is almost palpable!
Lyliku just nods, apparently accepting the lie. "That is why you are so weary around other wolves. I need something to call you..." The black wolf, surprised looks at Lyliku as she examines him. After a minute, she nods, apparently coming to a conclusion.
"Your fur color on your paws, it is almost the color of ash. That is what I will call you, Ash." She then looks at the black wolf, waiting for a response.
"So be it," the black wolf replied.
What is this ash she speaks of? Oh well, I kind of like it. It does, however have some similarity to my real name...
Lyliku, seemingly happy, picks up her pace. The black wolf continues to follow the she-wolf.

The Sun was beginning to descend behind distant mountains. The forest had not changed much, still dense, and rather gloomy looking. We should find a place to nap for the night, as we have been traveling all day.
Lyliku turns around, somewhat trotting and faces the black wolf. "What would you say to finding a place to nap for part of the night, Ash?" She impatiently waits for an answer.
The black wolf gives her a strange look, but replies, "I am rather tired. Yes, it would be best if we settle for the night. It looks as if there is a small cave a little to the west. Perhaps we would weather the night there?"
Lyliku is a little taken aback by the black wolfs response, "How did you...? Nevermind. Since you know where this cave is, you lead the way."
How could he have seen this cave? Impossible I say, he must know the terrrain...
The two wolves head to the cave in the west.
